Choosing the right programme is an important decision, and having the right information can help you make an informed choice. The Diploma in Communication at Taylor’s College is a hands-on programme that develops skills across advertising, broadcasting, journalism, and public relations—providing students with a strong foundation to succeed in the fast-evolving media industry or continue their studies.

To give you an insider’s perspective, Wan Jaslene Alissa Wan Kamaruddin, a current student in the programme, shares her insights by answering the ten most frequently asked questions she receives.

Jaslene Answers Your Top 10 FAQs

1.     What knowledge and skills should I have before starting this programme?

A strong foundation in English, particularly writing, is important because the programme involves research, reports, and creative content. It also helps to have basic knowledge of mathematics, accounting, and economics, as many projects involve making decisions in a company or organisational context.

2.     What professional skills will I develop through this programme?

The Diploma in Communications equips you with a wide range of professional skills beyond basic communication. You’ll develop problem-solving abilities for real-world situations, such as responding to company crises or handling challenges in events or campaigns. You’ll also gain skills in research, reporting, and content creation—including writing, filming, and working with digital media—all of which prepare you for the broader working world.

3.     What personal skills will I develop through this programme?

In addition to professional skills, the programme helps you develop personal skills that are valuable in both work and everyday life. You’ll strengthen critical thinking, build patience and emotional resilience, and enhance interpersonal skills, including teamwork and conflict resolution. Working alongside supportive peers and mentors gives you the opportunity to practise and refine these skills, so you can apply them confidently in any situation.

4.     Is the Diploma in Communication an easy programme?

A common misconception is that this is an ‘easy’ programme. In reality, it can be just as demanding as other diploma programmes. Strong writing and research skills are required across nearly every module. The workload is project-heavy, which can be challenging, but students who are passionate and committed typically learn to manage it effectively.

5.     What are the projects like, and what can I expect from them?

The projects are hands-on and often challenging, requiring significant effort, but they are also highly rewarding. You can expect to work on real-world tasks and collaborate closely with your peers, applying your knowledge and developing problem-solving and creative skills. This process provides a strong sense of achievement and practical experience, and the projects can be included in your portfolio for future jobs or university applications.

6.     What career pathways can this programme lead to?

The Diploma in Communication can open doors to a wide range of industries. Graduates often work in media and content, including journalism, broadcasting, and social media; in marketing, advertising, and public relations; in creative fields such as design; or in other sectors like politics and human resources.

Specific roles include journalist, feature writer, editor, scriptwriter, film producer, public relations professional, social media manager, copywriter, event organiser, and human resources roles.

7.     What if I decide not to pursue a career in communications later on?

Even if you choose not to continue in communications, the skills you gain are highly transferable. Teamwork, planning, and project management are useful in any field. Research, basic budgeting, and understanding of business concepts can be applied in areas like business or politics. Writing, media literacy, and creativity are valuable in education or in roles requiring strong communication and organisational skills.

8.     How can I tell if this programme is a good fit for me?

Think about your personal interests. Do you enjoy exploring digital media, creating stories, or editing videos? If you want to turn these interests into real-world skills and knowledge, the Diploma in Communication could be a great fit. You’ll not only deepen your passions but also learn how to apply them professionally.

9.     Is this programme suitable for introverts?

I’m an introvert myself, and I’ve found that introverts can succeed just as well as extroverts in this programme. Despite its name, the Diploma in Communication doesn’t require constant interaction, and working with people outside the programme happens only occasionally, such as presenting projects or campaigns and collaborating with clients or partners. Most projects involve research, project planning, and creative work, all of which rely on critical thinking, effective communication in English, and creativity—skills anyone can master, introverts included!

10.     Is studying communications really ‘useless’, as some people claim?

Whether a programme is considered ‘useless’ or ‘useful’ depends on how it is approached. The Diploma in Communication is broad by design, which allows students to explore different areas before specialising. Students who actively engage in programme-based projects, network through course-related activities, and take part in relevant clubs or internships often find the programme highly relevant and valuable when they enter the working world.
