It’s 11:47 p.m. An assignment sits open, and the explanation just won’t click. Instead of digging through lecture slides or combing through your notes, you instinctively turn to ChatGPT. Within seconds, an answer appears—clear, structured, and worded so well it reads like something you could’ve never written yourself. Moments like this, when a machine explains your own course material faster and even better than you could, suggest that artificial intelligence (AI) has become an ‘all-knowing system’. One with a ready answer for every question, making those once-impressive mental-maths geniuses suddenly seem… average. Over the past few years, AI has grown at a staggering pace. It can now access, process, and synthesise more information than any individual human ever could, doing so with speed and efficiency that feels almost unnatural. And that reality raises a dilemma many students quietly ponder but rarely voice out loud: if AI knows everything, why should we know anything?

How AI Knows Everything…

AI’s reputation as an all-knowing system comes from the way it’s built. Unlike humans, it doesn’t learn through lived experience—no painfully long lectures or brutally tough exams—but through the input of massive amounts of information, including data, algorithms, and patterns. This allows it to accomplish tasks instantly that once demanded hours, days, or even years from humans. It can tackle problems far beyond what we could manage, from solving advanced equations and generating reports, to writing code, composing music, and modelling intricate systems, all without tiring, losing focus, or burning out the way we inevitably do.

 

Not long ago, learning required real effort—a far cry from how effortless AI makes it today. Finding an answer often meant going across town to the library, browsing the shelves, flipping through pages, and still walking away unsure. Going back even further, knowledge was gained through trial and error, sometimes dangerously so. Want to know whether a berry was poisonous? Someone had to be brave, or unlucky, enough to try it first. Want to know if fire could be controlled? Someone had to get burned before learning how to use it safely.

… Maybe Not Everything

Yet for all its sophistication, AI’s knowledge isn’t without limits. The most immediate is its dependence on humans. AI doesn’t produce knowledge from nothing; it relies entirely on human-generated data, rules, and models. Everything it ‘knows’ has been discovered, documented, and developed over time, whether in rigorously conducted research or in meticulously engineered systems. It has fed on centuries of cultivated wisdom and continues to feed on what we provide. In that sense, AI isn’t replacing human knowledge so much as reapplying it.

 

Beyond its dependence, AI also lacks the human qualities that give intelligence its meaning. It doesn’t have emotions, consciousness, values, or genuine, lived experiences. It can’t learn from failures that teach us to try again or feel the jittery uncertainty that comes before a big decision. Nor does it know the satisfaction of finally solving a problem that had us stuck for days, the awe of seeing something beautiful for the first time, or the warmth of connecting with another person. These qualities inform how we learn, influencing how we interpret the world in ways machines simply can’t replicate. For us, intelligence is more than delivering quick answers or retrieving information; it’s grounded in personal and social experience.

 

The most critical limitation, however, lies in AI’s inability to exercise judgment and accountability. An AI-generated answer may be technically perfect on paper, yet still contextually, practically, or ethically flawed because it can’t assess which answers truly matter, decide how they should be applied, or anticipate the consequences they carry. Without lived experience, it can’t perceive the nuances of its outputs. When those outputs cause harm, responsibility falls squarely on humans, even if some now view this responsibility more as a burden than a form of power.

Why We Still Need to Know

Given its limitations, humans must ultimately bear responsibility where AI can’t. While routine and data-heavy tasks can be delegated to it, decisions involving context, consequences, and ethics must remain firmly in human hands. Just as a navigator interprets a map while a compass merely points the way, we direct how information is applied. This responsibility extends across education, healthcare, governance, business, and everyday life. Without human judgment, even the most sophisticated systems risk causing harm.

 

Humans also possess qualities that AI can’t replicate. Creativity springs from curiosity, pushing us to imagine beyond what’s already known. Intuition emerges from lived experiences, alerting us when a decision feels wrong even if the data suggests otherwise. Ethical foresight rests on values, guiding us to consider the consequences of our choices. Empathy stems from emotional awareness, helping us connect, communicate, and care. Together, these qualities enable us to make nuanced decisions, solve novel problems, and navigate intricate situations—capabilities AI can simulate in output but never emulate.

 

Finally, humans must continue to cultivate what we know—and what we don’t. Learning isn’t a passive outcome delivered on demand; it’s an active practice of deepening understanding and refining judgment. When we commit to this process, we resist outsourcing thinking itself. Instead, we leverage AI responsibly, preserving the human perspective in a world increasingly mediated by technology. In doing so, human intelligence remains central—equipping us to confront complexity, innovate with integrity, and guide a future in which AI serves human purposes rather than we serve it.

Conclusion

So, if AI knows everything, why should we know anything? After exploring what AI can do, what it can’t, and what only humans can, the answer is clear: AI’s immense knowledge shouldn’t be seen as a substitute for human intelligence. It’s a tool, and to use it effectively, we must understand its capabilities, limitations, and implications—a skill known as AI literacy.

 

Even when AI feels invincible, human intelligence is essential. That’s why we must be curious knowledge seekers and conscientious decision-makers—not mere consumers of it. We must keep learning, questioning, and reflecting on what we know, drawing on the very traits that make us human to make sense of the world and our place within it. All of this reminds us that, even in an age of AI, humans hold the heart of understanding, the pulse of meaning, and the very lifeblood of what it truly is to know.
