Beyond classroom! Taylor's ACCA students were crowned the Champion and Most Determined Team at The Accounting Competency Challenge 2022 and received a cash prize worth RM2,000 and a certificate.
The Accounting Competency Challenge is an annual competition hosted by Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM). It is open to all university accounting students, to challenge their accounting competency and proficiency.
Students showcase their problem-solving capabilities through simulated scenarios resembling real-world situations faced by accounting professionals. Besides accounting knowledge, they are also tested in other aspects such as their knowledge, interpersonal skills, leadership skills, and other soft skills.
Among 17 ASEAN universities, Team S.F.G., comprising Taylor’s ACCA students Leslie Lim Zhen Jian (team leader), Lim Mei Ting and Muhammad Fizrun Hakim, were crowned Champion and Most Determined Team. The team, representing Taylor’s College School of Professional Studies, ACCA, received a cash prize worth RM2,000 and a certificate.
During the competition, Team S.F.G. was tested with challenges specifically designed to mimic situations that arise daily in the accounting profession, as well as analyse environmental changes in the accounting field.
In total, 11 teams representing different universities were selected as finalists. They had successfully completed the preliminary assessment that involved a case study regarding various accounting and tax issues, which required the teams to identify key issues and suggest solutions for each of them. In the semi-finals, there were 3 challenges, with just the top 5 teams making it into the final round of Pinnacle Challenge: Sparks of Thought and The Roundtable Jouer.
In the final round, they were assigned the roles of senior personnel of a Technology company and shared their thoughts in a 1-hour mock talk show and 30-minute interactive session. The panellists of the final round consisted of Mr. Clifford Yap - Tax Partner of PwC Malaysia, Ms. Lee Chia Yee – Manager at Learning & Professional Development, BDO Malaysia, and Ms. Liza Tan – Director at Deloitte Malaysia.
Taylor’s Team S.F.G evidently made a good impression in the final round, with panellists commenting, "I really like how the team organised their ideas in every question asked by the moderator. The opening slides and informative statistics clearly showed the difference of pre and post pandemic usage of technology. I also enjoyed the lively and practical interactive session with Leslie and Fizrun giving their thoughts. A good job overall.”
Such competitions don’t just benefit students in terms of knowledge, but also provide an avenue for character development: teamwork, leadership, communication, critical thinking and problem-solving. ACC 2022 even inspired the students to organise their own competition to share their passion and enjoyment for accounting amongst Taylor’s College and University students.
