So exams are coming and you’re studying really hard, cramping in as much as you can that will either make or break your grade.

Suddenly, you hear a rumble. Then, another rumble comes in followed by a pang of pain. Oh no! All that hard studying caused some great hunger.

What if I told you that there was a way to kill that hunger AND boost your learning abilities at the same time?

We’ve just the list of fuel for your brain that’ll get you through those long studying sessions.

Berries

This fruit may seem small in size but they certainly pack a POWER PUNCH!

Ever wondered what gives berries their wonderful brilliant colours? Flavonoids.

The natural pigments in the berries, not only give them their wonderful colour but also helps in improving memory!

Having this as a snack will soon turn you into a memory powerhouse! Grab a handful of this sweet treat and beat those hunger pangs away.

Pro Tip: Pop a bunch of the mini wonders into a ziplock bag and place them in the freezer overnight for a delightful cold wake-me-up for those long study sessions. Here's a recipe for a sweeter treat.

Coffee or Tea

Low on energy? Swap that sugary can of coke with a good ol’ cuppa coffee or tea!

What gives coffee and tea its magical powers? Caffeine.

Present in both coffee and tea, caffeine is well-known to give you that short burst of concentration which is said to help you feel refreshed, focused and boost your happiness all at the same time! Something you’d definitely need when memorising those notes.

Pro Tip: While all the goodness may leave you wanting a whole lot more, take it easy on the caffeine. Overdo it and you may end up feeling jittery and uncomfortable!

Nuts

mixed nuts

From peanuts to cashew nuts, don’t underestimate the power of this small-sized snack! Nuts are an excellent snack to munch on at any given time. But what makes it so good for you?

Well, this superfood gives you an excellent source of protein with healthy fats that’s good for the heart and the brain, leading to an improved memory for better studying.

This snack truly have nuttin’ against them!

Pro Tip: A palmful of nuts (yup, it only takes a small amount!) gives enough juice for your brain to function at a high level. Planning to go on a road trip or a hike during your school holidays? Pack some nuts and snack on for an energy boost.

Chocolates

assorted chocolates

All you chocoholics out there, I have some good news for you!

Dark chocolate helps to improve blood flow making you focus much better. The antioxidants will help increase your focus and the happy chemicals in your body which are definitely welcomed when studying!

A word of caution though. Remember to choose chocolate bars with at least 70% cocoa and to not overindulge in this. Moderation is key with this treat!

Pro Tip: Let’s be real. Chocolate is a great snack all day, every day. If you’re hosting a group study session (or even if it’s just by yourself. Who's judging?), up your snack game with this chocolate avocado pudding treat!

Water

glass of water

Yeap. You read it right. Water.

We often tend to forget about simple necessities, like drinking water, when we’re focused on a particular activity. Being even mildly dehydrated may mean your brain isn’t getting enough oxygen and energy.

Here’s what you can do to help with rehydrating your body. Download an app, like Plant Nanny2, that will remind you to water those virtual plants and hydrate yourself. Your body (and virtual plants) will definitely be thanking you for it.

Pro Tip: Are you the kind of person who would rather die of thirst than drink that plain ol’ water? Spice up your water with some of your favourite fruit. Try some of these infused water recipes or come up with your own!

Bonus Round!

It’s common to skip out on the most important meal of the day. No matter what the excuse, though, always try to have a healthy breakfast.

After a good night’s sleep, our body would be low in blood glucose and would be running on less fuel. So make sure you listen to your momma’s advice and fuel up!

Well, there you have it! Ditch those junk food that will only give you empty calories and a whole lot of guilt once you’re done binging. Instead, opt for one of these healthier alternatives. Remember, while you should be studying hard, don’t forget to fuel up and eat smart.

Fueled up? Let's get back to studying!
